It’s important that children learn about health and wellness at as early an age as possible. They will learn some things in school, but their greatest amount of learning is going to come from home, from you. You need to, for one thing, lead by example, and to make sure that they know what it means to be healthy and how to make that come about.
If you tend to have bad habits, like smoking and eating fast food, then that is how your children will learn their bad habits. No matter how many times you tell them smoking is bad while you are smoking they are going to see it as OK because you are doing it.
Lead By Example
If you are a smoker, stop now. If you eat a lot of junk food, start integrating good foods into your diet now. Even if you haven’t always set the best health example for your children it’s never too late to make the changes needed to show them the importance of healthy living.
You also want to teach them to take care of their skin, by using sunblock on yourself as well. Teach them that it is not scary to go to the dentist, by always getting your own checkups on time, and making sure they know how often to brush their teeth and how to floss.
Teach Them In The Kitchen
Children are great learners when it comes to hands on. When you start teaching your child about healthy eating take them into the kitchen with you. Even if they aren’t old enough to chop vegetables or cook food yet they can still learn by watching you.
Show them the difference in ingredients of healthy foods opposed to unhealthy ones. Take them with you to the grocery store and have them pick out healthy alternatives to their normal snacks, like air-popped popcorn instead of potato chips or berries instead of chocolate bars.
Don’t Be Afraid To Talk About It
There is more to being happy and healthy than just eating right. You also want to make sure that your children know about the dangers of drugs and alcohol, and yes, even the dangers of sex. You cannot be afraid to talk to them about these things.
Talk to them about STDs and other sex dangers. Make sure that you aren’t just telling them not to have sex, but also teaching them how to have safe sex. You also want to talk to them about drugs and alcohol, and the fact that these can lead to sex, addiction, and even death.
If you don’t teach your children about being safe and healthy they will learn about things like sex and drugs from other places, and what they might learn could be something far from what you’d hoped for them.
